Aftercare Tips For Coming Home With New Dental Implants

Posted on: 29 April 2015

If you are getting ready to schedule your appointment to finally get the dental implants that you have been wanting, you will need to make sure that you are doing what you can to prepare for what you will deal with when you get home. With the following aftercare tips, the first few days that you are home with your new dental implants should be a lot easier for you.

Avoid Hot Drinks At First

It may take several hours for the anesthesia to completely wear off. Until it does, you will want to make sure that you are doing your best to avoid drinking hot liquids. The reason for this is that you could easily end up burning the inside of your mouth. That burn will not only hurt, but it could get infected. The last thing you want to do is to cause yourself any injuries while your mouth is trying to heal from the insertion of the dental implants.

Help Reduce The Swelling

You may experience a little bit of swelling for a few days after the procedure. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about as long as the swelling is slowly going down instead of getting worse. To help reduce the swelling and discomfort, you can use an ice pack, or a frozen bag of peas, against the swollen area. Do this a few times a day in order to get the best results.

Control The Pain

Many people find themselves worrying about the pain that they are going to experience after the implants are in place. In most cases, the pain is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen. It is best to take your first dose of the pain killer before the anesthesia completely wears off. This way, you will have little to no time where you are in a tremendous amount of pain. If you find that the over-the-counter pain medications do not work very well for you, you do have the option of asking your dentist for a prescription that might be a little stronger.

With the previously mentioned aftercare tips in mind, you should have no problem caring for yourself while you heal from the new implants. All you have to do now is schedule that appointment at a place like Crystal Dental Care and finally get the nice new teeth that you have been wanting. The sooner you get into your appointment, the sooner you will be healed and feeling back to normal.
